יטראז - vitrage

While I am aware of the fact that זכוכית מגוונת zchuchit meguvenet appears in Alcalay, the word in use in Israel is the French vitrage, spelled vav yod tet resh alef zayin (with a single geresh - but when I write it like that here it comes out on the right instead of on the left). It is used both in the singular and in the plural form - ויטראז'ים. The other suggestion, as you know, means simply colored glass, which is not the same thing at all :-)

I just realized the vav was missing - it should be ויטראז, of course.

agree Eynat : Quite correct. Chagalls stained glass windows at Hadassak Ein Kerem, for example, are called ha-vitrajim shel Chagall

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Alkalai and other dics have correct "translations" - but the term USED both in art history, art, practical explanations is indeed ויטראז (the French term). Thank you."

disagree Eynat : Maybe that's the Akademia word (is it??), but nobody in Israel uses this term.

זכוכית צבעונית - Zechuchit Tzivonit

Colored glass = זכוכית צבעונית
Although in Hebrew "Stained" = "Muchtam" and not Tzivoni, the rightterm in this case is "Zechuchit Tzivonit"

Peer comment(s):

disagree Eynat : This means 'coloured glass', and is not used for stained glass which is called vitraj in Israel.
