English term or phrase: brick
Growing up to 35 metres (115 feet) tall, they may survive to the grand old age of 500 years – longer if coppiced. Twig tips support spiked clusters of purple flowers, the male and female blossom separated onto different trees or branches. Their winged keys float down, to be dispersed by birds and mammals. Caterpillars of coronet, brick, centre-barred sallow and privet-hawk moths grow plump on ash leaves with attendant butterflies such as the rare high brown fritillary.
