English term or phrase: each one level at the base and curved at the top
Teetering up on the piled remnants of fallen walls and roofs, you can see that the remaining walls do not simply have flat surfaces but are covered in vaulted niches, each one level at the base and curved at the top. This is a palomar, a pigeon loft. The base of each niche is tilted slightly upwards at the outer edge to protect the eggs from rolling out. It is clear that, when fully intact, this building would have housed a vast number of birds.
