I'm not too certain how to interpret this:

Il faut surtout remarquer qu'il n'y a pas dans l'organisme d'autres cellules isolées, c'est-à-dire qu'aucune autre de même nature entoure, jouant un rôle aussi important.

It seems to me that the confusion only arises because the FR uses the singular, and we would more naturally use a plural in EN.

Clearly a cell can't literally be 'surrounded' by just one other cell, though it might be adjacent to etc.
