French term

difference between drainage routier and assainissement routier

French to English Tech/Engineering Construction / Civil Engineering roads
Hi all
This is in a civil engineering methodological note for a motorway construction project in West Africa.
Context:
and

I have consulted Guide technique Drainage routier (GTDR) – SETRA, mars 2006, which indicates:
But the difference between the two is not clear to me.
TIA for your help

Thomas Miles Apr 3, 2020:
wastewater (management/treatment) system I see "assainissement" as the stage after the water has been drained off the road surface, involving any treatment to mitigate potential contaminants (or at least to pipe this water to somewhere where it will do less harm).

Here is a local authority mentioning this connection with some form of system handling wastewater once it has been drained:

Eureka! Thanks for your help Phil. Thanks to Alex Greenland I have found another answer which I prefer, on https://www.standardsforhighways.co.uk in CG 501 Design of highway drainage systems "Road drainage can be broadly
split into two categories: SURFACE AND SUB-SURFACE
DRAINAGE." and " SURFACE DRAINAGE is achieved through collection of
surface water runoff from the pavement (and potentially
adjacent land) through formal (e.g. kerbs and gullies) or informal (over
the edge) drainage, discharging into longitudinal surface
channels or piped systems. SUB-SURFACE DRAINAGE is achieved by installation of
longitudinal sub-surface drains situated in verges and/or
central reserves at the low edges of road pavements. These drain the pavement layers
and the pavement foundation (pavement and capping layers are

contiguous with the side of the trench) and prevent ingress
of water from verge areas adjacent to the pavement. "

Yes I was originally thinking of translating drainage by "road drainage" and "assainissement" by "surface drainage", but the Guide Technique de Drainage routier explanation rules that out.
philgoddard Apr 2, 2020:
"Drainage" is pretty obvious because it's the same in English. If I understand you correctly, you want a translation for "assainissement".
Andrew Tooms (asker) Apr 2, 2020:
Oops Translation of both terms would be a great help.

drainage/dewatering

The primary purpose of a road drainage system is to remove the water from the road and its surroundings. The road drainage system consists of two parts: dewatering and drainage. “Dewatering” means the removal of rainwater from the surface of the road. “Drainage” on the other hand covers all the different infrastructural elements to keep the road structure dry.

And your own text says: "Les fonctions spécifiques des systèmes de drainage interne des chaussées sont clairement différenciées de celles de l’assainissement de surface."

So assainissement is removing surface water and keeping the road dry.
