a type of rotisserie for chicken...the spits themselves don't turn, but all of the spits rotate around on a sort of belt, so the chickies stay horizontal...
I thought of "broasted" but maybe that is a brand in the U.S. not a cooking method...

poulet (or pigeon) en crapaudine means flattening the bird out so that it cooks faster and all the way through. Not sure an there it is less thick and can be grilled more quickly. Not sure about the spit device to do it, though. as you describe.

I'm not saying this is the right word for a rotisserie for cooking chicken.
In the context of _building construction_, crapaudine is a strainer basket, basket-strainer, or grating.
Maybe, in the cooking context, this means some sort of thing formed with a metal grid/grille (or grating or wire netting), and the chicken is compressed and gripped within two of them, and held in front of a rotary grill?
I'm not saying this is the right word for a rotisserie for cooking chicken.

I accept that cuisson à la crapaudine means cuisson à plat, but I think there's probably a link between "crapaudine" and grating (or other similar terms), which would explain how the expression came into being.

This word occurs in the novels of P.C. Wren about the French Foreign Legion ("Beau Geste" and others) to mean a punishment for legionnaires. I can't be sure of the details but I think it involved being lashed to a grating and left exposed to the sun.
