Maybe: somebody translated from Engl. into German and did not know what to do with "wad". Have a look at:

Seems to me a "bundle of hay" might fit the description?

From what I could glean from some websites, a certain type of temple in Thailand is called wad, e.g. Wad Arun, temple of dawn

agree Melanie Nassar : possible, but usually spelled Wat as in Angkor Wat // then I would say this fits the context beautifully, I can just see the contrast with the green vegetation

spelling is ok, Angkor Wat (t) is in Cambodia
neutral BrigitteHilgner : according to Duden and my technical dictionary, "Wad" (engl. "wad") is a mineral - but I doubt that this meant here.

Rice species?

Just guessing - I found this on google:

The keys to the successful future of California rice production are locked in the genetic makeup code of current varieties and other "germplasm" sources. That's also possible. The fact that the asker states that it is the name of a plant made me offer up this one. There are so many names for rice in SE Asia, like the proverbial 'eskimo' names for snow.
