This term came up as part of the packaging for a face cream. I asked the client what it meant and received the following explanation:
La patella è un termine tecnico per definire il dischetto di plastica che viene collocato nei vasetti di crema per proteggere la crema ed evitare che la stessa vada a contatto con il tappo.

sealing disk
They are called sealing disks. They do not 'float' but rest on the top of the jar/pot and are used as a seal particularly if the contents are very liquid.
