I apologise for giving a phrase and actually the whole phrase is: ho finito la notte con 'genoa a farfalla tangonato sul buttafuori tutta rand' and describes a person's experience on a yacht. The individual words are not a problem: it's the way that they're put together that I can't fathom Any yachtspeople out there?

Il genoa è una vela (tipo spinnaker)
vela a fargalla si dice "goosewinging"
tangone è un "pole" che tiene la vela in fuori (in questo caso la randa è a sn (ad es.) e il genoa a destra
però il buttafuori è un tangone corto "jockey-pole"
la rand è "spanker", la vela grossa dell'albero di maestra.

Quindi la barca aveva randa e genoa a farfalla, quest\'ultimo con buttafuori; per andare a farfalla ci vuole il buttafuori

The "tangone" can be either a spinnaker pole or a jib pole - depends on the individual boat, so you could leave out the adjective

la randa ha il suo boom. Non ho mai utilizzato o visto un attrezzo di nome "jockey pole" - a che serve esattamente? In questo caso comunque il tangone si sta utilizzando per il genoa (o jib)
