Mult-ilayered would be the vertical direction here, i.e., one thing on different levels. Fragmented would be in disconnected pieces. The literal translation would be multi-thread(ed), of course.

The sentence does not mean ANYTHING without further context. Who is saying that? Is it supposed to something bad -- like incohesive? Or something good like discussing the whole multitude of different problems.

Nie jest to dokladne tlumaczenie, ale wydaje mi sie ze lepiej pasuje do tematu niz "multi-threaded" albo "multi-themed".

Ja zawsze odpowiadalam recenzentom ze ich sugestie sa "clearly beyond the scope of this paper", ale to moze byc za daleko od oryginalu.
