The correct nouns (opening/cavern and oven/kiln) will depend on the context of the passage - if it is a domestic scene or industrial... стояла agrees with печь, and so it unlikely that печь here is being used as a verb without a subject, and from research brick sand is often used in the construction of wood-fired oven openings/enclosures (see below) hope this helps!
