Russian term
выбирается
Russian to English
Art/Literary
Poetry & Literature
Context:
– Ну, теперь наша очередь! – удовлетворённо произнес Тихонов, глядя как из оставшихся от вражеских кораблей облаков раскалённого газа, затянувших пространство впереди крейсера, растерянно выбирается четвёрка фрегатов.
Does that mean that the cruiser is "taking out" the frigates (i.e. destroying)?

: растерянно, неуверенно, без точного понимания, что делать, getting away/escaping ИМХО подразумевает целенаправленное, уверенное действие

watching as the four frigates made their tumultuary emergence from...
For a less literal approach to a complex sentence. You can switch the adjectives, if you like, but I'd suggest using this form.

: все-таки глагол "выбираться" имеет пометку разг.

Either you're a terrible translator who can't see beyond verbatim translation, unaware of Kudoz peer-commenting rules, or simply boorish. I can't decide which.

: "Tumultuary"-new word for me, used for "disorganized" with ref. to troops, forces! But, is "Tikhonov" looking for targets to fire on? The asker will know, but that context cd demand "four frigates" w/o "the", and "a tumultuary emergence" not "their".

Thank you, Rachel. At first I read the frigates as friendlies, which would justify the definite article and "their." But in fact they are hostiles, so you are right. Also, I settled on 'tumultuary' specifically because the context is clearly a battle.
