Diffuse Central Effects and the Permeable Periphery We document a distinct difference in structure and function between the sensory periphery and the neocortex. In the neocortex, we do not find any evidence that the sizes of cortical areas are related to visual niche. Our conclusion is that selection pressures have produced a ‘diffuse’ effect, with selection acting on the neocortex as a whole. In the sensory periphery of the visual system, we find the opposite: a clear and predictable relationship between structure and function.
