Spanish term

salsa blanca

Spanish to English Other Cooking / Culinary
"Salsa blanca" is a type of sauce (apparently from Argentina, I have not found references from any other place) made with butter, flour, milk, nutmeg, salt and pepper (really yummy!). Does anyone have a clue on how I could name it in English? any kind of similar sauce...
Thank you in advance for your time...!

Jane Lamb-Ruiz (X) Nov 16, 2005:
Bechamel and white sauce are made from the same ingredients basically. The difference is that White Sauce is Entirely Liquid..whereas Bechamel is used on top of food that is Baked in an Oven until the Sauce is slightly Crispy on top. cheers

White sauce.

This is what I would call it in English.

The addition of nutmeg is a little unusual but a fairly standard term for any sauce made from butter, flour and milk is \"white sauce / a \"white sauce\" in English. Example: \"I\'m going to make a white sauce now and then we\'ll pour it over the XX\". HTH.

agree Mariana Gesualdi : This is how I would call it. I usually prepare "salsa blanca" with nutmeg, as do many people I know in Argentina. "Bechamel" is cooked differently, you put flour in a pan and then add milk, while for "salsa blanca" you put milk to boil and then add flour.

white sauce, bechamel

Believe it or not, it is also called "white sauce" in English. One version is bechamel. http://www.dianaskitchen.com/page/sauce/bechamel.htm

agree Jane Lamb-Ruiz (X) : White Sauce and Bechamel are not the same thing; white sauce is liquid; Bechamel is basically the same but it is cooked in the oven...Bechamel is the baked version of white sauce.

The name bechamel is given to different dishes. You can also find many recipes for a bechamel that is not baked in the oven (as in the reference I provided).

white sauce

This is simply 'white sauce' in English, used in many differnt ways, with vegetables or pasta for example.
Can also be called bechamel sauce if you need a fancier name for it.

salsa blanca // salsa bechamel

The term which can also be called bechamel sauce has been left as is in the website below:

http://www.bordergrill.net/images/menu.pdf#search='sals...

"Ingredientes:

Manteca: 50 gr.
Harina: 50 gr.
Leche caliente: ½ lt.
Sal: 1 cucharadita
Pimienta: a gusto
