Alexander, I also read "вообще" as "completely," "totally," "entirely" rather than "generally" or "in general""

: Yes, in general. "Whereas" is a possible alternative to "while".

: Wjat is this "generally?" Either it happens or it doesn't happen. And if it doesn't happen, I assume there are some otehr weird conditions. This is PHYSCIS. Aren't the experiments supposed to be repeatable?

I would endeavor to explain what this "generally" is but believe that a dictionary definition must suffice. How about this: http://www.m-w.com/dictionary/generally ? A hint: "weid conditions" may account for "specific instances".

while...completely
And don't make it a separate sentence - just put a comma before the "while", like this:
The conductivity of steel, blah blah blah, can change by a factor of 6-8, while ferromagnetic materials completely lose their ferromagnetic properties blah blah blah.
The conductivity of steel, blah blah blah, can change by a factor of 6-8, while ferromagnetic materials completely lose their ferromagnetic properties blah blah blah.
