wooden cask

I thought of Poe's "Cask of Amontillado!" Actually, I live in the land of Xerez-Sherry-Jerez... The best sherry is made in Jerez de la Frontera and in El Puerto de Santa Maria, province of Cádiz in Spain. The bota jerezana is a large wooden (oak) cask where the wine is left to "mature" or ferment and some of them, where the best is kept, are hundreds of years old. HTH!

disagree tenidiomas : the term "bota" refers to a leather bottle in the north of Spain, but not in Jerez where sherry is stored in "butts". Likewise, a barrel is a generic term and used for the storage of many things (beer, etc..) but wine is stored in a "cask"

sherry butt

The correct english term for a wooden cask used specifically to store sherry is a "butt" (which may cause amusement to American colleagues), though the more generic term of "cask" is also widely used. In the north of Spain the word "barrica" is used when referring to wine casks and "bota" when referring to the leather "bag", but this is not the case in Jerez.

Here in Jerez the 500 litre butt is known as a "receiving butt" and is used as a standard measure for buying and selling sherry, whilst the "bodega butt" used for aging and maturing has a capacity of 600 to 663 litres.
