French term

ventouse magnetique a commutation de flux

French to English Tech/Engineering Engineering (general) magnetization
Yes, I know it looks like a bunch of terms, but it really is only one instrument. I think it may be a 'flux-switching holding magnet' if there is such a thing (Google was inconclusive on the point).... can anyone comment on this and/or suggest a better term?

Here's the context (I'm fine with the rest of it, which is very straightforward):

Les **ventouses magnetiques a commutation de flux** permettent d'etablir une force magnetique (de 50kg a 30 tonnes) au moyen d'une impulsion de courant. Elles sont equipees d'aimants pemanents avece bobinage d'excitation et ne necessitent aucune energie d'entretien.

Discussion

Bourth (X) Nov 16, 2006:
If it IS a door, though - a big door - then "magnetic hold-open device" would be the more correct term. The circuit is broken in the event of fire, and the door is closed by a spring.
Bourth (X) Nov 16, 2006:
What is this used for, out of curiosity? Given the "30 tonnes", it's hardly likely to be a magnetic doorholder!

disagree Bourth (X) : No suction involved. "Ventouse" is said of a magnetic holding device (like a door holder), presumably because, as with a suction cup, it operates on physics, not mechanically.

that is in fact what I meant - holding by suction - but I get your point, it might not necessarily literally mean that. Hopefully, somebody else will come up with a better idea...

3 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Chose this answer in the end, because, whilst the comment on 'suction' was perfectly valid, if that part is taken out of the answer, the resulting terms seems pretty accurate to me. Plunger switch answer pretty good too, but need time to research that more. Thanks to all. "

magnetic plunger switch

As simple as it sounds in the end, this reference may provide the answer to the question as to what this item is. This pdf even has a picture that includes an "aimant" and a"bobine."

Dynamic modeling of a release for a plunger core.
Abstract: We present herein a model of the release mechanism for a plunger. The results presented account for the effect of eddy currents induced by the opening of the magnetic circuit. The comparison of these results with a quasi-static model is also presented.
I – Introduction
Generally speaking, the switching of electromechnical converters takes place according to four operating phases.
1. A steady state resulting from the magnetization of a magnetic circuit with air gap;
2. A transient state with forced electrical excitation, mechanically static because of the preceding switching release;
3. A transient mechanical state inducing a transient electrical state superimposed on the forced electrical excitation;
4. A switched state, again mechanically static.

agree blavatsky : looks like it could be a 'circuit breaker'

Thank you! I thought your answer was correct until I found this reference to a plunger switch. :-)
