German term

Grundakte

German to English Law/Patents Real Estate land register
This is from a document which states that one of the things a notary should do in this particular case is to consult not only the land register, but also the *Grundakte*. Does anyone happen to know a nice translation for this? According to an online dictionary of architecture,

Für jedes Grundbuch wird eine *Grundakte* geführt. Sie enthält alle Urkunden, die sich auf Grundbucheintragungen beziehen.

I can't find an English equivalent anywhere, but it would be so convenient if there were one, then I wouldn't have to use a footenote :-)

I don't know if there's an exact equivalent in BE or AE. But the dictionary is quite good and one of our members participated in writing it - Alec Evans.
agree alec_in_France : Sounds fine. This is one of those situations where there is unlikely to be an exact equivalent and it might even be risky to give that impression. My favoured method is to keep the German word, followed by an explanation in brackets

Register of title

My understanding is this:
The land register contains the maps dividing land into numbered parcels. You consult it to ascertain where the particular parcel is and to find its number.
You then turn to the Grundakte which sets out the tile to that particular parcel and tells you who is the owner, what mortgages or charges affect the land and any other matters that affect it such as rights of way.
"Register of title" would indicate this I think (I happen to be looking at one as I type this!!!).

neutral Lancashireman : Do you think this might be a USE v BE difference? We always refer to ‘deeds’ in the plural (cf 'Urkunden' as above). Unfortunately I have lent out my copy of Romain…
