Italian term

specchio riflesso chi lo guarda è un fesso

Non-PRO Italian to English Art/Literary Slang children's slang
From a script in which a group of child-like characters are throwing insults at each other:

Nidir: senti NEDEB, la vuoi smettere di fare il FURBETTO

Kiki: lui la smette se tu la smetti di fare la saputella so tutto io!

Nidir: ma sentila, ha imparato a camminare da un giorno....

NEDEB: faccia da pesce palla!

Ziki: SPECCHIO RIFLESSO CHI LO GUARDA E’ UN FESSO

Obviously I'm not looking for a literal translation here, but does anyone have any suggestions for a suitable equivalent in English? I'm having trouble remembering playground insults today!

Catherine Salbashian (asker) Jan 17, 2007:
Hi JudyK - It's a comeback from Ziki to the insult above from Nedeb, "faccia da pesce palla!" - I think Melissa is indeed on the right track!
JudyK Jan 17, 2007:
Hi Cathsal - what exactly is the (non-literal) meaning of your expression?

I know you are but what am I?

Is this what it is like?

This is a guess ;)

And there's also the classic "It takes one to know one", if I'm on the right track!?

Ahh.. memories!

Yes - I never thought of these expressions being related before, there being kid and adult versions! Thanks Valeria ;)

3 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks for all your suggestions, I'm going to go with "It takes one to know one" which Melissa suggested first (thanks also to Sally Winch!) - although I liked the other suggestions too!"

people who live in glass houses...

...shouldn't throw stones

or "that's the pot calling the kettle black".

Both of these come to mind, but as they're children, I think Melissa's suggestion might be better.

I am rubber, you are glue, whatever you say bounces off of me and sticks to you.

What we always used to say on the playground... I know the meter doesn't scan very well, but if you say the second part fast enough, it sort of comes out right in the end!
