Spanish term

ser de la otra cuerda

Spanish to English Social Sciences Idioms / Maxims / Sayings
Hello. From a Ortega y Gasset quote:

Thanks for your help :)

they're from another turf

On the other hand, if you wish to preserve the prison analogy, you might prefer "belong to the other gang" or "belong to the other crew".
Peer comment(s):

agree Noni Gilbert Riley : Mendicutti uses the expression in an interview: http://www.map.es/gobierno/muface/v179/perfil.htm Here is seems to mean simply "of the other type". Further hits for "de la otra cuerda" all point to being "on the other side" .//Yr distinction valid!!

I would say there is a subtle difference, though. "Not one of us" could be an innate condition, whereas "belonging to the other side" could be a matter of choice.
