Spanish term

optativas comunes vs. créditos de libre elección

Spanish to English Other Education / Pedagogy course description
This is the description of a university course:

Asignaturas obligatorias propias de la especialidad, optativas comunes para fomentar la interdisciplinariedad y créditos de libre elección para que cada alumno pueda configurar su propio currículum.

My first thought was to translate "optativas" as "electives", but what does that make "libre elección"? I am also unsure of the meaning of "comunes" here.

Spanish from Spain for UK English. Thanks in advance for any insight into this!

Discussion

Kim Bakkers Sep 7, 2007:
At the uni of Manchester, libre eleccion was called 'free choice' and meant you could take one module from any department, whether it was related to your degree or not, which matches the description Narcis gave.
Narcis Lozano Drago Sep 7, 2007:
Libre elección: asignaturas de cualquier carrera o curso adicional de la Universidad, aunque no tiene nada que ver con Física, Filosofía, Traducción, Música. En mi universidad funcionaba así. Un saludo.
Rebecca Hendry (asker) Sep 7, 2007:
Hi Nikki, yes, that makes sense, and ties in with what the text refers to as "interdisciplinariedad" and with what taylorreigne explains below. Now I just need to work out how to express all that in English!
Narcis Lozano Drago Sep 7, 2007:
Ejemplo usando la carrera de Fisica
optativas de la especialidad: optativas específicas de la carrera de Física.
optativas comunes: optativa que comparten 2 o más carreras por estar relacionada con las dos (Historia de la Ciencia, para Química y Física)
Nikki Graham Sep 7, 2007:
I suspect the "optativas" are optional across the board (all subjects, that's why they're "common") and the creditos de libre eleccion are the optional elements within the course being studied. Does that make sense?

not sure what the UK...

...equivalent is but optativa is is a course you choose among the courses of your specialization (major), while courses de libre eleccion are ones you choose outside it. If you major in Literature the you might choose Shakespeare as one of your optativas, and a history course for a course de libre eleccion. In US de libre eleccion is an elective and we don't really have a word for the other.

common optional modules/courses vs. credits of elective modules/courses

Actually, I understood it the wrong way round..

How about:

common optional modules/courses

Computing Science Modules

Information Systems students must take modules from Schools outside Computing Science to a value of 40 credits. The common optional modules are available by following the link below.
