English term

deportee

English Law/Patents Government / Politics Immigration/Deportation
Dear All,

According to various of my references, a deportee is
- A deported person.
- One forced to emigrate, usually for political reasons
- expelled from home or country by authority

My question is:

Can this term be also used for a person who has not yet been deported but is under deportation proceedings? Is there any other term (e.g. (sic?)deportant)?

TIA
S.

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Can be a person not yet deported

I can't think of any other single word to describe this.

If the person being deported is in detention, detainee would be the usual word.
Note from asker:
No, he is not in detention. "The person being deported" could be an option, but it seems too long. I am also considering Cristina's comment. What do you think? Thank you for your time :)

agree Cristina Santos : deportee noun [C] a person who has been, or is waiting to be, deported (from Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary http://dictionary.cambridge.org/define.asp?key=20856&dict=CA...

agree Michael Powers (PhD) : It can be a person that is officially deported, but has not physically been deported because the original country will not accept him back, and no third country has offered to take him either. - Mike :)
