neutral liz askew : "chief" would be in the vernacular in the UK, not the official term.

I probably should have noted that. In Belize, they use Department Head also. SaludoZ, Liz!

Thank you, Ines - Mike :)
agree Victoria Porter-Burns : I'd say so Mike. Or 'Head of Department' would probably be more common in UK English, if that's what's required. Have a good day!

Thank you, Victoria - I like "Head of Department" in the U.S. also - at least in the hospitals in which my father used to work as a physician (he is retired now) - Mike :)

Thank you, Carol - Mike :)
agree liz askew : For the UK, yes. Even "manager".

Thank you, Liz - interesting use of "manager" - Mike :)

Thank you, Cecilia - Mike :)
agree Dr. Jason Faulkner : In the UK (and the U.S. Navy, strangely enough. I think that's because in the Navy, a "head" is also a toilet). SaludoZ, Mike!

Thank you, Jason - I am sure we have both known some heads that we would like to treat like toilets - Mike :)

chief of service

"Chief of Service" is extremely common in blood centers, hospitals, and services within a hospital. Better to stick close to the original when the original is already a good choice. Examples:
