Discussion

Alexander Kondorsky Mar 3, 2008:
Natalie - это все понятно! Потому и было написано очень осторожно - "возможно в Вашем случае". Очень многое зависит от контекста. Может быть подойдет и просто "incomparably higher" и масса других вариантов, чтобы избежать ненавистного русизма - times!
Natalie Mar 3, 2008:
Позвольте не согласиться с by an order of magnitude: порядок - это 10; в тоже время есть огромная разница между 2х10 и 9х10, а при этом и одно, и другое подпадают под определение "десятки раз"
Nik-On/Off (asker) Mar 3, 2008:
Я ж говорю "на первый взгляд"
Alexander Kondorsky Mar 3, 2008:
Ну где же просто? Это один из "камней преткновения"
Nik-On/Off (asker) Mar 3, 2008:
Да, а на первый взгляд кажется, что все просто
Alexander Kondorsky Mar 3, 2008:
Я недавно поднимал этот вопрос. Увы, ничего гениально-нового не добился :-((. Приходится продолжать выкручиваться. Все зависист от контекста. Возможно в Вашем случае хорошо впишется by an order of magnitude

neutral PoveyTrans (X) : Don't normally comment on other peoples' answers if I answer but I am not sure that this is appropriate here as in UK English it is normally colloquial // agree but my understanding is that this is scientific writing but sd one correct the style?!

Thank you, Simon. I don't see a big problem here, as the RU original, strictly speaking, also doesn't sound too scientific at all :-)

agree Ed Friesen : All the expressions using "tens"/"multiples" are highly uncolloquial. Other option, if there are MANY tens, would be "by an order/several orders of magnitude". I'd say the first would cover a range of roughly 3 to 30, the second anything more than that.

neutral The Misha : No, Zamira, it's not good. Tenfold would be beter, but then it doesn't cover multiples of ten. No offence.

agree The Misha : ... in the absense of broader context. Could be totally out of whack stylistically though.

Thanks, I think style here is the main problem posed by the question, this option is stylistically neutral..'dozens of' is much more informal IMO.
neutral Yakov Tomara : An example: 1060 exceeds 1000 by 60 (a multiple of 10). It suits your definition but not the source phrase. Or I'm wrong?
