English term

plush down-like blanket

English to French Other Textiles / Clothing / Fashion
C'est un article que l'on trouve dans une chambre d'hotel.

"Plush-like blanket" est une couverture peluchée. Mais qu'est-ce que "plush down-like"?

The asker, the person with the selected answer, and the moderators, are the only people who can post and edit a glossary term for a Kudoz question. The person who posts the entry gets 10 browniz points, which can lead to a discount on membership. :-)
Claire Chapman Sep 28, 2008:
You can also add the term to your own glossary, and can create your own glossary, if you do not already have one.
It is important to put terms into the glossary so that others may find them. Additionally, Rule 1.4 states that it must be done :-)
Claire Chapman Sep 28, 2008:
Thanks, Morgane17. To add a term to the glossary, click on the "Gloss" button which appears only after a question is closed. Both the original term and the selected term appear in the "Glossary Entry" box, but both terms are editable & may be changed.
Salima Post (asker) Sep 28, 2008:
Hello GWC-Claire, thank you for your note but it is not in the glossary. :)
Claire Chapman Sep 28, 2008:
Thank you, Morgane17. I would ask that you omit "peluchée" when you add this term to the glossary. I think that "couverture en duvet synthétique" would be fine. :-)
Salima Post (asker) Sep 28, 2008:
This is true. I apologize.:(

couverture peluchée en duvet synthétique

"down" c'est le duvet utilisé pour remplir les édredons ou les couettes. "down-like" signifie "comme si c'était du duvet" ou " genre duvet".

http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-down.htm :

"Down is the layer of fine feathers found underneath the outer feathers of adult ducks, geese, and other water birds. This same layer of feathers is the only layer a baby bird has. These feathers provide birds with warmth and insulation, which is especially important to birds that spend a vast amount of time in water in colder climates. It is because of this insulation property that many products, such as blankets, comforters, sleeping bags, and jackets are made with down."

http://europe.westin-hotelsathome.com/FRENCH/productGroup.as... :

"Couette en duvet synthétique
Garnie de fibres synthétiques anti-allergènes, aux bords biseautés pour créer l’effet « meringue » réputé du lit Heavenly Bed."

Je traduirais comme ceci: "couverture peluchée en duvet synthétique"

couverture en micro-fibre

pour plush et couette pour down blanket

Je n'arrive pas à trouver le mélange des deux. Curieux, non ?
Note from asker:
Who knows...

couette [en fibres] synthétique[s] [de luxe]

First, let me make it absolutely clear that we are absolutely NOT dealing with a blanket made from a pile fabric. In this case, plush modifies down-like, not blanket. One can verify this fact by looking at down-like pillows, which are not made from a pile fabric either.

A blanket that is filled with down is called a comforter (une couette). A comforter can be stuffed with down (une couette en duvet) or with synthetic fibers (une couette synthétique).

Plush, in the context of a pillow or a comforter, is referring to the soft, luxurious stuffing of feathers, or synthetic fibers, that fills the interior. I can't find a comparable use of the idea of plush as rich or luxurious in ads for hotels in French, so I suggest omitting it. If you prefer to retain it, my suggestion is "de luxe," but use whatever best fits your idea for a luxuriously thick comforter filled with a soft, synthetic down.

This is usually a white, **very plush down filled pillow** that is incredibly soft and warm. Thanks to advancements in cleaning methods average people like us can now get a pillow like this and not worry about allergies that are commonly associated with down pillows and allergens. Synthetic down comforters are great for people who would like the luxury of down but can not afford it. They are filled with special material that feels as soft and warm as the real down.

A comforter is a type of blanket. Comforters are intended to keep the user warm, especially during sleep, although they can also be used as mattress pads. Comforters are generally large and rectangular in shape, filled with natural or synthetic insulative material and encased in a shell/covering. Like quilts, comforters are generally used with a set of sheets.

To answer your question, yes. However, this is where things get tricky since in US English a duvet is usually the cover of the comforter (une housse de couette). But a duvet can also be the comforter itself (une couette). So, when translating from English to French, you need to know which is intended.

In the US, confusion often occurs as the word "duvet" may refer to a comforter cover rather than the down blanket itself. This is how the term is used by several large retailers:
"For those of you enjoying a down comforter, or even just looking for a change for your bedroom, a duvet could be the perfect answer. Since you will be placing your comforter inside the duvet, it is important that the appropriate size be selected." — Bed, Bath and Beyond, Sizing Up Your Bedroom [1]
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duvet

du·vet –noun
a usually down-filled quilt, often with a removable cover; comforter.

Note from asker:
Thank you for this explanation. It is clearer now. How will you translate "duvet" which is also a "couette"? Can you leave it as it is?
