Discussion

Marcelo González Jan 15, 2009:
Soledad: Do you have a target audience in mind? Also, is this a translation of a diploma that has been recently awarded? The answers to these questions may have a bearing on how literal of a translation you might want.
Eloi Castellví Alonso Jan 15, 2009:
Pues no sé si es muy "normal", porque como español es la primera vez que oigo eso.
Supongo que lo más adecuado sería traducirlo literalmente.

teachers/teachers' college

This is another more contemporary (but still dated) option (in the context of higher education in the US). The university where I received my bachelor's degree in New Jersey (US), used to be called Jersey City Teachers College.

Soledad: Is the document from the present day or is it historical? At least in the US, the term "normal school" has virtually fallen into disuse (other than in the context of the history of education).

I hope this helps!

IN RESPONSE TO JUDY and her suggestion (of "college of education"): In the history of education, "normal schools" (which later came to be known as teachers colleges in the US), are autonomous institutions created specifically to train teachers; in contrast, "colleges of education" are, at least in the US, NOT separate institutions, but rather "schools" (in the sense of faculty/college) that form part of a given university, e.g., the College of Education of Florida State University (FSU): http://coe.fsu.edu.

Thanks, GoodWords!
agree Kathryn Litherland : Yes, I would say that in the US, "normal school" is quite archaic and "teachers college/teacher training school" would be preferable.

exactly :-) // Unless there's some sort of history-related reason for using "normal school," this might be the way to go. Thanks, Kathryn!

In the United States, the function of normal schools has been taken up by undergraduate and graduate schools of education; the schools themselves were upgraded to universities focused on meeting the needs of the region in which they were located. Many famous universities, such as the University of California, Los Angeles were founded as normal schools. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Normal_school
Example sentence:

El proceso inmediato que llevó a la creación de la primera Escuela Normal española comienza, recién llegados al poder los liberales al morir Fernando VII, con el Real Decreto de 1834 del Ministro de lo Interior, Moscoso de Altamira, en el que la Rege
