Like Tom, have spent years grappling with this one. In the end settled on this, and have used it without any objections by clients (one of whom is the Sicilian Archaeological Heritage Department):

on second thoughts, not quite clear if the job in question is actually the soprintendente, or just someone who works for the soprintendenza. Adjust my suggestion accordingly

After kicking this around for many years I've settled on "Superintendency" as the best way of translating it.
