French term

intensite culturelle et universitaire

French to English Marketing Tourism & Travel Culture
This piece is about the European capitals of culture etc...

I have translated this phrase as either cultural and university strength/depth/intensity?/

not too sure

l'intensite culturelle et universitaire permet d'analyser a la fois le capital culturel et educatif dans l'enseignement superieur et l'effort annuel global consacre par ville pour sa politique culturelle:

Discussion

Helen Shiner Nov 2, 2009:
Context I feel we need to have the sentence preceding this one to have half a chance of assessing what is meant here by l'intensité - this is particularly evident in the widely varying meanings being offered in answerers' suggestions.
Graham macLachlan Nov 2, 2009:
missing context the author must have defined somewhere in the text what he or she means exactly by "intensité", is this not the case?
Françoise Vogel Nov 2, 2009:
Where does it come from? Is it some personal tool the author uses to evaluate cultural life?

cultural and academic intensity

You could also say something like "the high concentration of cultural activities and universities..."
Peer comment(s):

neutral Martin Cassell : to a native EN reader, 'intensity' and 'concentration'(/'density') are entirely different things

The idea was that academic "intensity" would stem from having lots of universities around - there would be a thriving scene, if you will.

concentration of cultural and university-organized activities

I agree that more context would help. I wonder if this is what the author means?

spread of cultural and academic activity

Or even "cultural and academic spread", i.e. they look at how much cultural and academic activity goes on in a given city to assess the city's commitment to these areas.

density of cultural and university structures

Another possibility - I feel that there are many possible ways of phrasing this

"density of cultural" and "density of universities" both Google very well. It's just a matter of linking them. Structures/features/establishments/...

the wealth of the cultural and academic scenes

just another stab.
Peer comment(s):

agree Jocelyne S : Without further context, I like "wealth", but I would probably use "activity" rather than "scenes".

measuring the extent of cultural and academic activity

The phrase itself is very 'intense' and perhaps needs a bit of unpacking?

or how about 'gauging cultural and academic vibrancy'?
