He estado dándole muchas vueltas al término "decantación" en este contexto hasta que me he decidido a escribir esta entrada. Es uno de esos difíciles y bonitos problemas de traducción.

Intentaré explicar por qué he optado por "differentiation", rechazando otras soluciones, proceso que no me ha resultado nada fácil.

La mayoría de mis colegas es consciente de que "decantación" es un proceso de separación de mezclas de substancias puras: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decantation. Sólo Steven parece haber pasado por alto que es de la segunda acepción del verbo "decantar" de la que deriva el substantivo "decantación":

"Separation" o "segregation" son palabras muy negativas, incluso para los nacionalistas. Lo sé porque, además de español, soy vasco. También se me ocurrió la solución de Jenni, "development", que es interesante, pero, en mi opinión, demasiado neutra: no expresa la forma en que el desarrollo tiene lugar. También pensé en "refining", como Marian, pero "decantación" no implica la extracción de lo más fino en una substancia. Tampoco "sublimation", que es el paso de un estado a otro, me satisfizo. "Creating", la propuesta de Simon, no me parece acertada, sabiendo que no es una cuestión de crear identidades (éstas ya existen), sino de diferenciarlas de otras. Ormiston tiene razón acerca del mosaico: diferenciar y conectar. "Shaping" sería una solución que yo tendría en cuenta: demarcación de la identidad (http://www.informaworld.com/smpp/content~db=all~content=a910... pero me parece que conlleva una carga negativa de limitación.

Soy consciente de que "differentiation" puede sonar prosaico. Se emplea en la sociología (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Differentiation) y en la etnografía (http://books.google.de/books?id=bHG8TUTZUzMC&pg=PA279&lpg=PA... en esta última disciplina con el significado con el que, yo creo, el autor emplea "decantación". En mi humilde opinión, en un texto tan bien escrito como este, es necesario ceñirse lo más posible al original, a riesgo de perder algo por el camino (a veces se gana!).
