I'm not sure how best to translate "old" but I really think this is "bizutage" rather than just any old "blague" to make everyone laugh.
My Collins & Robert has this to say about "bizutage":
"This usually involves being subjectged to light-hearted ordeals by one's new classmates, but can degenerate into humiliating and cruel pranks".
Personally, I don't class holding a knife to the throat of a sleeping person as a joke - at least, I wouldn't see it that way personally.
