verificarsi di una gravidanza

Italian to English Medical Medical (general) Medical trial statement
“Mi impegno, sotto la mia personale responsabilità, ad evitare durante l’intero periodo di sperimentazione e nei… mesi successivi, il verificarsi di una gravidanza, non potendosi escludere, a priori malformazioni del nascituro e a dare immediatamente comunicazione, nel caso restassi incinta”;

Can any kind person throw any light on this, please? Thank you in advance.
Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (1): luskie

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Discussion

Stuart and Aida Nelson (asker) Mar 17, 2011:
Sonia and Maria Thank you very much for the explanation.
verificarsi its the italian version of gerund. a (Verb+si) construction of a verb, which then becomes a noun. in this case we speak about verificarsi as *happening/occuring*
Sonia Hill Mar 17, 2011:
It's not an error. It simply means "occurring", so to prevent pregnancy from occurring in this instance.
Stuart and Aida Nelson (asker) Mar 17, 2011:
What we didn't understand was the use of "verificarsi" and were wondering if this is an error in the Italian

avoid pregnancy

It's a female who writes or declares. Maybe she is about to partecipate in some experiment or a course of medical treatment, which may be harmful in case she is/will become pregnant. She is not yet pregnant and is not supposed to be, because the treatment may defect a baby. That is why she signes the autocertification that she will *do her best* to not let the pregnancy happen but in case it happens she acknowledges her sole responsibility for a baby born with imperfections.

agree SJLD : yes, this would be the most idiomatic - undertakes... to avoid pregnancy http://www.google.fr/search?sourceid=navclient&hl=fr&ie=UTF-...

The term "verificarsi" simply means "occurring" in this case. In literal terms, the woman signing the form undertakes to prevent pregnancy from occurring during the trial and for however many months afterwards.
