inglés term

off-the-shelf equipment

Homework / test inglés al español Medicina Medicina: Instrumentos
The term is used in an article about catheter ablation. Here is the context: "Recently, we have demonstrated that esophageal deviation is indeed possible using off-the-shelf equipment (a soft thoracic tube and endotracheal stylet) in patients undergoing AF ablation." I am not sure if this is an actual term or if it is just an expression.

As Otto explains More than 'ready to use' it's "standard" equipment with no particular modification for any specialised use which can be easily accessed
Otto Albers (X) Aug 30, 2011:
off-the-shelf this comes from a common usage of the fact that all components needed to get something done can be found in a store, where parts are easily found in shelves, as in supermarkets, etc. It's an expression of commonnes, not needing highly sophisticated equipment to accomplish an objective.
