Hi everyone,
I am translating a series of Technical Specifications which describe the painting process of train carriages and I have come across some terms I can't find a suitable translation for...
Please see further context:

5 PROTECCION DE PARTES DE ACERO

5.1 Preparación de chapas o perfiles de acero antes de las operaciones de fabricación
En general, las chapas se prepararán de acuerdo al siguiente proceso:
1° - Desengrasado con disolvente
2° - Chorreado hasta conseguir:
rugosidad: 3.2 m < Ra < 12.5 m
grado de preparación: Sa 2.5
3° - Eliminación de polvo
4° - Aplicación de Shop Primer con un espesor 8  2 micras

5.2 Tratamiento de cajones cerrados de acero

La protección contra la corrosión de cajones cerrados se realizará mediante pulverización de una cera inhibidora de la corrosión. El inhibidor se aplicará a través de agujeros convenientemente localizados con el fin de garantizar el 100% de cubrimiento en el interior.

Una vez el inhibidor se haya aplicado, los agujeros se cerrarán con tapones de plástico.

Producto: VALVOLINE TECTYL 210 R

Los cajones completamente cerrados no recibirán ningún tratamiento posterior dado que la entrada de aire nuevo no se puede producir. La humedad inicial presente dentro del cajón será captada y consumida por la protección de zinc por lo que posteriormente no se producirá corrosión significativa.

En caso de que el inhibidor no pudiera ser aplicado por razones industriales, las secciones huecas podrían ser protegidas antes del sellado con una capa de pintura rica en Zn aplicada sobre el Shop primer.

Para cerrar estos huecos y con el fin de no interferir con el proceso de soldadura, se reservarán zonas de 10 mm de ancho a lo largo del área que debe soldarse (ver anexo 4). En el caso de zonas donde no se pueda reservar este ancho, no se aplicará esta protección rica en Zn y se dejará sólo con Shop Primer.

So I've just received the client's feedback - apparently in other translated documents they have this term appears as "closed steel box", whatever that is...
So as long as the client's happy, I guess...

Hi again and let me once again thank you for your time and effort. The agency that gave me this assignment is trying to contact the client and ask about this thing (they haven't had any feedback so far but I'm still hoping that they manage to get any sort of information)... If I get an answer solving this mystery, I'll let you all know as well!

As I understand it, the drawings are of the areas that are affected by the welding, which have to be left unpainted. They're really small: 1 cm, 6 cm, etc. If you can't ask the client, I think I would just translate "cajón" as "(air-tight) enclosure", which although it isn't right, it might not be completely wrong.

Hi again! I´ve found one photo of the damn "cajones cerrados" in the entire documentation, it is included in one of the Annexes. Unfortunately, there is no more information, just the photo with a note "Zonas sin pintura para cajones cerrados". I saw Eski had posted twice and I thought it was allowed. Yes, I know, I should read the rules. I'm only trying to help and, as yet, I don't think any of us really know what the boxes, beams, containers, drawers are.

Big Ed's idea fits the context of a sealed unit which is air-tight (and therefore not opened again later like a drawer or a railway car or a container), however I have doubts about 'cajon' translated to 'beam' - new one on me....

I've been thinking about your dilemma all day! Now I've got some free time, I've started Googling again and I've only come up with the water tanks under the carriages (for the toilets) and sealed (air?) compressors - for the air conditioning I suppose - but I'm afraid I've lost the links.

Hi and first of all, thank you for your time and effort! It has been (and in fact still is) such a tough research process... There is no other context I'm afraid and from the overall chapter I can only assume that they're mentioning some steel element (which is why I'm not too keen on "cars" I'm afraid...), just like the plates and profiles mentioned before that... And on top of everything they're closed/sealed! I've been actually trying to find out what the Valvoline Tectyl is used for but only got this: "designed for protection at factory level of enclosed boxes, seams, joints and other creviced locations of vehicles, susceptible to corrosion". An enclosed box doesn't make any sense either though...

Presents a bit of a dilema, doesn't it? To be frank, I also believe that "cajones" may refer to the train cars themselves, although I don't know about whether there are such things as sealed cars.
I'll Google around and see if there is such a thing.

What about the description - these drawers / cajones are completely closed to moisture as they only need a zinc coating and no further treament, whereas the 'open' drawers presumably need a further treatment.... what's your thoughts?

Is it a sleeper train?? I have seen on the internet references to sleeper trains and the drawers that they have for each compartment....just an idea. However I am not sure what is a 'closed drawer' (from the description the 'cajones cerrados' are completely closed as no further moisture will enter them and increase corrosion - only the zinc treatment is needed). Good luck....

When built from new in factory steel shipping containers are generally shot blasted with a fine material which cleans any oil or grease from the bare metal and keys the surface in preparation for painting. The bare steel is then usually primed with a zinc rich primer and once dried a final top coat of marine paint is applied. This paint again usually contains zinc phosphate and is based on acrylic resin and non-chlorinated plasticizer. When painting our containers we use a similar topcoat which has been specially designed by a marine container paint manufacturer to be suitable for steel containers, to have anti corrosive properties and to be a one coat system meaning a primer is not required. Our paint is usually applied using an airless spray system meaning that maximum coverage is achieved ,in addition to a fairly constant thickness, resulting in a finish that both looks good and lasts. Surface preparation is very important when considering painting your shipping container. If any oil or grease or flaking rust and debris is not removed correctly in the first place then any subsequent paint application will not adhere properly and the finish will not only look poor but will not last.

The carriages are fully enclosed. In each carriage, trash and excrement are collected into two sealed containers, which are not to be disposed on the tracks, but taken out at big stations like Golmud. Likewise, sewage water from the lavatories is collected and discharged only when train stops at certain stations. The collected trash is even compacted and ultra-violet disinfected before they are disposed.
