Discussion

Diarmuid Kennan (asker) Jul 15, 2012:
Thanks for this Leif :)
Leif Henriksen Jul 14, 2012:
Fwiw, Store Norske Leksikon, in its article about humus, says:
Gytje og dy er særegne former av humus, dannet ved bunnfelling i åpent vann.

And there is actually a small article about 'gytta' in English Wikipedia.

Maybe this can help you on your way....

dy

Definition
Finely divided, partly decomposed organic material accumulated in peat soils in the transition zone between the peat and the underlying mineral material. Dy-peat also refers to amorphous material formed from humus soils that have settled in lake waters. Dy is poorer in nutrients than gyttja and is characterized by a high C:N ratio.

agree Leif Henriksen : Well researched, even if the result is a bit 'boring' in being the same as the source :)

gyttja

According to Wikipedia, peat is high in organic content, while gytte is decayed peat.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Michele Fauble : The question was about 'dy', and 'gjyte' and 'dy' are not the same thing.
