Spanish term

N-acetiltriptofanate de sodio

Spanish to English Medical Medical: Pharmaceuticals pharmaceutics
Ingredient in a medicine.

Looks like it would be Sodium N-acetyltrptophanate, but that gets too few hits. Is the right term something else? "Sodium-acetyltryptophanate" looks more promising, but what about the "N"?

Sodium N-acetyltryptophanate

Hi,

Only the above translation makes sense, as N Sodium acetyltryptophanate would mean that there N sodiums. As least that is what I think.

sodium N-acetyltryptophanate

Actually it seems that even in Spanish it is more common to let out the "N" (i.e. "acetiltriptofanate de sodio").

For some reason the author has chosen the fuller name here, so perhaps you should keep the N in English.

Anyway, it is still the same substance.

N-acetyltryptophane is an amide, where a hydrogen on the amino-nitrogen of the amino acid tryptophane has been subsituted by an acetyl group.

When talking about the amide, it seems most common to include the N. The amide is a week acid, and can thus form a salt with sodium, i.e. sodium N-acetyltryptophanate (with or without the "N").

Just a comment on Patricias answer: the \"N\" does not indicate anything about the number of acetyls or sodiums, but rather indicate that the acetyl group is bound to the Nitrogen atom of the tryptophane.

But of course Patricia is right int that it should not read \"N-Sodium ...\"
