English term

the outs and inns

English to French Art/Literary Poetry & Literature
Sir Walter Scott writing about his property Abbotsford :

‘I have always had a private dislike to a regular shape of a house’, he explained, ‘although, no doubt, it would be wrong-headed to set about building an irregular one from the beginning. But when the cottage enlarges itself and grows out of circumstance, which is the case at Abbotsford, the ***outs and inns ***afford, without, so much variety and depth of shade, and, within, give such an odd variety of snug accommodation that they far exceed in my estimation the cut-lugged bandbox with four rooms on a floor and two stories rising regularly above the other’.

Discussion

Jean-Claude Gouin Jul 19, 2013:
THE INS AND OUTS ... The ins and outs is how we say it today; in Sir Walter Scott's days, it may have been different. Today, we write 'ins' but, again,
it may have been different in Sir Walter Scott's days ...
Daryo Jul 19, 2013:
without = dehors, à l'extérieur de la maison
within = dedans, à l'intérieur de la maison

Ma modeste proposition... (se passer de la répétition et renforcer ces éléments ailleurs dans la phrase)

Bonne chance Nathalie!
