It's a special type of modified RS232 cable where inverting the connections between pins 2 and 3 produces a mirror-cable.

It isn't just '2 or 3 of the pins crossed', but actually 'pin 2' and 'pin 3' (and of course pin 3 and pin 2 the other way round, too!)
