Spanish term

CONTRAALMIRANTE AN. PA.

Spanish to English Law/Patents Military / Defense
The issue is the initials after the designation of a rear admiral of the Mexican Navy, i.e. AN. PA. Does anyone know what these stand for?

Kind regards. Sian.

Helena Chavarria Nov 6, 2013:
Though when someone mentions a pilot, I'm afraid I immediately think of a sea pilot, not someone who flies aircraft!
Helena Chavarria Nov 6, 2013:
@Charles Quality is far more important than points :) I enjoy answering questions and I was pleased to be able to find out what AN. and PA. mean but I just didn't have enough time to find the correct translation, which is the real purpose of KudoZ.
Charles Davis Nov 6, 2013:
@ Helena That's rather a pity, because although I don't think the translation was quite right it was a great piece of detective work. I sometimes think questions like this should carry double points; first you have to work out what the acronym means (which you did before anyone else) and then how to translate it. I spent a little while this afternoon looking up the Mexican Navy Law, which is how I found out about the cuerpos and all that, but these things do take time.
Helena Chavarria Nov 6, 2013:
@Charles I should learn to refrain from answering when I haven't got time to produce a convincing answer. Thank you for the explanation. Because my answer is only half right, I will remove it.
Charles Davis Nov 6, 2013:
These letters Mexican naval officers have after their names are of different kinds.

One sort corresponds to a branch of the service or "cuerpo". These are Cuerpo General (CG), Infantería de Marina (IM), and Aeronáutica Naval (AN). So that's the first of our two.

Secondly there are the "servicios", which include, for example Administración e Intendencia Naval (AIN) or Sanidad Naval (SN): some eleven in all.

The third kind is a professional specialism within the service. These include Ingeniero Mecánico Naval (IMN), for example. PA (piloto aviador) is another of these.

Finally, there is DEM (Diplomado de Estado Mayor) or DEMN (Diplomado de Estado Mayor Naval), advanced qualifications taken by those destined for high rank.

In the Navy, if you're a PA you must presumably be in the AN, but of course in the Air Force you can be PA without being AN.

Hi eski, and thanks!
agree Charles Davis : I posted a discussion entry expressing reservations with this but I think it's correct: "Naval Aviation" for AN and "Pilot" for PA.

Thanks Helena. //I might add that you deserve the credit for at the very least deciphering the letters and feel that I should be the one to remove my reference, albeit the intention was just that (a reference!).
