Fida Malki (X) Nov 19, 2013:
Or for translators who aren't even Egyptian?! :) I try to stay out of KudoZ in Egyptian slang, as I know I'd be totally clueless to most everything being asked!
Steve Booth (asker) Nov 19, 2013:
Now think how difficult it is for us translators who don't even have kids to ask :)
Well not ones that speak Arabic anyway
Fida Malki (X) Nov 19, 2013:
Oh dear Samaa, that must be a nightmare for you as a translator but at least you have your trusty children (bless them) to clue you in :)
Samaa Zeitoun Nov 19, 2013:
Very true, Fida. I'm Egyptian & I keep hearing weird terms. If it weren't for my teeanage kids who are familiar with these terms at school & in online chat, I wouldn't have a clue as to what they mean.
Fida Malki (X) Nov 19, 2013:
I'm beginning to think Egyptian has become its own language (somewhat similar to Chinese) with extremely distant meanings to expressions that are totally unrelated to Arabic in anyway :)

(just) forget it

One of the new terms extensively used by young Egyptians. It may mean: انسى / طنش / مش هاينفع.
This was mentioned before in a recent question by Amel Abdallah. I'll post the link if I can find it.

Or it may mean: "never mind" or "it doesn't matter", depending on the context. It's a flexible term, but one thing is for sure: it's not considered offensive in any way.
