The vision for the closing process is to achieve a one day unit GL close by W1D1 5pm (local time) to enable automated corporate submissions on Monday night. Period end will no longer be an event for finance and there is a reduction in overtime hours within the period close process.

Important factors for consideration to enable the vision are:

• Any tasks that are not necessarily performed during closing are done before the period-end, e.g. reversal run of accruals, monitoring of transactions and the checking of data accuracy levels.
• A globally defined closing schedule, supported by standard day by day tasks list is followed consistently in each period by every unit within Mars Inc., which brings simplification, cost reduction and greater accuracy to the company as a whole.
• Automation enables real time management reporting for some elements of the unit financial results.
