Warsaw's National Philharmonic Explanation: It very much depends on the style you like, but I find this interesting. I agree with the first idea, yet... If you ask an orchestra violinist why she was late, she'd probably say she couldn't get into the "hall." As a matter of fact, the Concertgebouw means just that "recital or concert hall" -- not that I'm opposed to "building" -- just my 2 cents worth. I'd just say the name first, without "building" or "hall," then refer to the Concert Hall or building as you write about it later. Here is one example by a well-known classical music commentator: "The Schauspielhaus has recently been renamed Konzerthaus (Concert Hall) in acknowledgement of its new function as a hall dedicated chiefly to music. As Berlin's most elegant concert hall, it offers a stark contrast to Scharoun's futuristic Philharmonie only a few minutes away in what was once West Berlin." - Roger Clement I translated part-time for Warner Classics for 5 years. the National Philharmonic Hall Explanation: I agree that "hall" is the better match here. "Orchestra founded in Warsaw in 1946 (renamed in 1947 and I955); it replaced the Warsaw PO (1901-39). Concerts are given in the National Philharmonic Hall (rebuilt 1955)..." http://www.xrefer.com/entry/193966 Reference: http://www.xrefer.com/entry/193966 |
