Discussion

David Gibney Oct 8, 2014:
The only on-line references in English I can find for "base containing side-chain" and "acid containing side-chain" appear to be translations of Asian patents. Everything else refers to specific molecular compounds e.g. carboxylic acid-containing side chain, aceric acid-containing side-chain, amino acid-containing side-chain, etc. Isn't it strange that there is not one single on-line reference to "base containing side-chain" and "acid containing side-chain" from an English source and over 600,000 for "base side-chain", "acid side-chain", "basic side-chain", and "acidic side-chain"?
David Gibney Oct 8, 2014:
Thanks for clearing that up, Nakcl! I was wondering if you could answer a few questions please? Is the base of nucleobase and 塩基 of 核酸塩基 the same principle? Does 塩基 = base/alkali? Is "acidic/basic" used to refer to the charge on the side-chain molecule? Do you have any examples of molecular formulas showing where the base is contained on the side chain? Thanks in advance!
Jason Kang Oct 8, 2014:
'Basic side-chain' means 塩基性側鎖.
Jason Kang Oct 8, 2014:
No, no. 'Basic side-chain' is different from 塩基含有側鎖, which should be 'base-containing side-chain'.
David Gibney Oct 8, 2014:
I definitely agree with Nakcl's suggestion of "basic side-chain" (and "acidic side-chain").
Jason Kang Oct 8, 2014:
I think acid-base can be used to describe the character of the side chains, like acidic side-chain or basic side-chain. 塩基 used like this usually refers to 'base' in nucleic acid, not acid-base.
David Gibney Oct 8, 2014:
"Base-containing side chain" is too direct a translation from Japanese. "Alkyl side-chain" is used in the same way (similar to "acid side-chain").

'~ containing side-chain' is a common jargon on chemistry e.g. DNA-containing side-chain, nitrogen-containing side-chain.
