Spanish term

indicadores

Spanish to English Medical Medical (general) medication prescription criteria
This is from an article that discusses criteria for prescribing statins based on cost-effectiveness criteria (and the impacts of these decisions on patients' health). The sentence in question reads:

"En Cataluña, uno de los indicadores del CatSalut para la evaluación de la prescripción de estatinas, tanto en atención primaria como especializada, es el porcentaje de uso de simvastatina respecto al total de estatinas."

I don't understand the use/meaning of the word "indicadores" here. If I assume it's "indicators" [this is the most common translation I find] I still don't understand the meaning of the sentence.

Please help me understand the sentence and what is the best way to translate this word "indicadores" in this context.

Thanks for your help!

Discussion

Helena Chavarria Jan 15, 2015:
The amount of 'simvastina' used (the percentage it represents as regards other statins) in respect to the total number of statins is an indicator that is used to evaluate the prescription of statins.
Helena Chavarria Jan 14, 2015:
For example, consumer price index (CPI) serves as an indicator of general cost of living which consists of many factors some of which are not included in computing CPI. Indicators are common statistical devices employed in economics.

I find the word crops up quite often nowadays and I usually translate it as 'indicator'. It's a pointer or index that shows the state or condition of something. It indicates something is going to happen/could happen/is needed, etc.

agree philgoddard : Not predictors - that means something different. An indicator is a yardstick or benchmark.

criteria

This makes sense to me, but maybe I'm missing something.
Note from asker:
Hi Muriel, thanks for your suggestion. I thought of "criteria" also but then the authors use the word "criterios" in the next sentence, so I think it's best to stick with "indicators" after all. ("Este está basado en criterios de coste-efectividad" is what follows the sentence I posted above.)
Peer comment(s):

agree Rachael West : Both valid answers I think, but I prefer criteria in this context.
