It's not very elegant, but I can't think of a catchy way to say "in the direction from which the traffic is coming", which is literally what you're trying to say here.

contraflow
I think your 'against oncoming traffic' is a good solution, but if it needs to be more technical maybe work the word 'contraflow' into the sentence, e.g. 'in the contraflow direction'. In the UK we have e.g. contraflow bus lanes and contraflow cycle lanes.

"mot trafikriktningen": in the context of the direction in which somebody is looking, it is probably the same as "in the direction of traffic": somebody looking in the direction (Sw. "mot") in which the traffic is moving.
A source of confusion is that the box is facing one direction, while the operator must face the opposite direction.
