because why

‘What have I missed?’ asked Wolf.
‘We sent officers to babysit Garland, Ford and Lochlan. We’re only concerned with the ones in London.’
‘Because why challenge me to stop him then kill someone on the other side of the country?’
What does "because why" mean here?

because, why...?
If you put a comma it will appear clearly.
"I'm explaining, why challenge me to stop him, then (etc.)..."
Can you see it now?
Punctuation is suffering a lot of casualties, these days, but this is an instance that shows how fundamental punctuation is!

: But I don't think "because" followed by a comma is correct punctuation either

: I agree on the need for either a comma or a dash, but disagree with Didier's (rather French) suggestion of quotes or brackets.

So, why...
I think this is Wold speaking again (as per the quotation marks)
His previous question was
‘What have I missed?’ (asked Wolf). (perhaps it means what have I not understood? what am I not getting? but need further context for that)
now he is asking "So, why was I asked/challenged to stop him..."

: Reading it again, I don't think 'because' is right, though I appreciate we might use it in spoken English. // So do I, Wolf says 'So why challenge me to... and then kill someone...?' Or, 'What's the point of challenging me to... and then kill...?'

Discussion
On the other hand, if this is somebody else speaking, then the "because" might similarly refer back to something that same speaker had said earlier in the conversation.
