English term
fit
English
Science
Mathematics & Statistics
Although the measurements fit a log-normal distribution, it can be seen from Fig. 4.1–30 that it was only after June 2011 that levels of 137Cs started to be measurable (assumed detection limit about 10 Bq/kg).
Another sentence:
The differences in the parameters associated with the fit of the distributions are not significantly different between the application of the probability distribution function and cumulative distribution approaches.
Another:
These data illustrate the effect of assumptions regarding the dose intervals (or bins) and suggest that the fit of cumulative distribution data is good while the PDF is rather poor.

In general terms, we may talk of there being a 'fit' when two things measured in possibly different dimensions match or correspond; this is often used when referring to plots on graphs or other results of functions.
So for example if we have a graph of outdoor temperature over a given period, and the graph of national electricity consumption over the same period, we might notice a 'fit' between the graphs if more electricity was consumed on colder days.

estimate the parameters to minimise total deviation
"Total deviation" usually being measured by sum of squares of differences between measured data and data deriving from the estimated parameters.

: The text seems not to call for that precision, even if such a statistical method had been used (extremely likely). Also, the grammar needs to fit. //True!

I think the asker is asking what "fit" means with a view to producing a non-English TT. Neither Tony's nor my answer belong in an English TT, where the term "fit" is exactly what's required.//Thanks Barbara.
