The main objective of an APS system is to provide the best possible solution for planning or scheduling issues based on optimal cost-benefit analysis for orders, demand, supply, capacity, and logistics. For example, in the case of a shortage constraint, an APS system should help answer the question of whether the most important customers should be satisfied first (regardless of profit margins) or the most profitable schedules created first. An APS system allows for prompt reaction to market changes, improved throughput and delivery times, optimized inventory levels, and improved customer service, leading to reduced costs.
