Lecturer is the name given to university teachers in most of the English-speaking world (not the US or Canada) who do not hold a professorship. Lecturers are generally divided into Lecturers, Senior Lecturers, and Readers and are normally permanent positions in a university which involve carrying out both teaching and research.
1. One who delivers lectures, especially professionally. 2a. A member of the faculty of a college or university usually having qualified status without rank or tenure. b. A faculty member ranking below an assistant professor. c. The academic rank held by such a faculty member. 3. Chiefly British A university teacher, especially one ranking next below a reader.
