Comprovante de Inscrição e Situação Cadastral
Hi all,
On a Brazilian CNPJ Comprovante de Inscrição e Situação Cadastral, does "data de abertura" refer to the date the company was founded, or the date it was registered in the CNPJ? There is another date futher down the page, "data da situação cadastral"--what exactly does that refer to? In this case, the first date is fifty years before the second date.
Thank you!

(company's) founding date
If your text talks about a company that exists for more than 50 years, it would have been a CGC, which stands for Cadastro Geral de Contribuintes (General Taxpayers Registry). Not CNPJ.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CNPJ
Up to 1998, the CNPJ was known by the acronym CGC, which stands for Cadastro Geral de Contribuintes (General Taxpayers Registry).
The CNPJ consists of a 14-digit number formatted as 00.000.000/0001-00 — The first eight digits identify the company, the four digits after the slash identify the branch or subsidiary ("0001" defaults to the headquarters), and the last two are check digits.
https://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cadastro_Nacional_da_Pessoa_Ju...
(this last one should clear up your second question)

: This is it. It's not the date of foundation or the date of CNPJ registration. It's the date when the company opens its doors for business, IMO.

If the company started more than 50 years ago, perhaps 'trading' would be a more appropriate term
Discussion
I for one would like to learn and I would say all of our colleagues who gave their input in this question trying to help you would like to know as well.
quite a good explanation!
3. Data de Abertura: The date when the company actually opens its doors and starts doing business officially. [ the company cannot open for business, without a CNPJ - they're applying for it at this point in the process]
2. Data de Constituição: The date when the acts of incorporation (bylaws) are signed/executed (this is the date of foundation). [ yes, I agree, this is when the company was established/founded/however you want to call it) in the EN article I submitted with my answer, they translated it literally as "Opening date", but I prefer to call it "founding date" which is the date the company was formed, by having the partners execute the Articles of Incorporation (BTW,not acts) or bylaws.
Please go thru this article again: http://thebrazilbusiness.com/article/cnpj-for-dummies
1. Data de Cadstro/Registro no MF: The date when the CNPJ is issued.
2. Data de Constituição: The date when the acts of incorporation (bylaws) are signed/executed (this is the date of foundation).
2. Data de Registro na Junta Comercial: When the bylaws are registered at the Board of Commerce.
3. Data de Abertura: The date when the company actually opens its doors and starts doing business officially.
Note these dates are entirely different from one another, as bureaucracy in Brazil is amazing.
