Portuguese term (edited):
queimar o filme
make you look bad
Tem 3 expressões, mas acho que a melhor mesmo seria "make you look bad"
As outras são
salt one's game
cramp one's style!
--------------------------------------------------
Note added at 12 mins (2017-12-11 18:34:07 GMT)
--------------------------------------------------
Tem ainda: "make a fool of yourself". Acho que também ficaria boa neste contexto.

Look bad
Queimando filme has several uses in everyday language but typically it means either to be made to look bad
Você está queimando o meu filme !! Sai fora !!
Or
It applies to either be made to look bad or to do something to oneself that makes a bad or embarrassing impression
to add a synonymous phrase in context, you can say that ' vocês vão passar uma vergonha - or you'll make fool's of yourselves" to get the same point across

Cheers mate! Brexit schmexit! I've just "read" the SUN, which my son gave me from the plane as a laugh, and to be honest it no more than the "english" deserve as they are so concerned with their own belly buttons :-)

Discussion
"doing yourself a disservice"
But what difference does it make if it's Pro or Non-Pro? Please vote non-Pro if you wish, and you can also suggest to other people you're in contact with to do the same. It really doesn't matter.
P.S. I think 'doing yourself a disservice' is the best answer so far. Some are better than others, IMO.
Also "uma comunidade", which I only noticed now.
